Museums

Florence abounds in various Renaissance museums, among which world-renowned Uffizi and Pitti Palaces, Palazzo Vecchio, Museum of Modern Art and other galleries.

Palazzo Vecchio is the historical residence of the Medici family. Both Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti lived and worked in Florence at the beginning of the 16th century. They received commissions for the interior of palazzo, but great fresco projects were never realized. However, the palace hosts many other masterpieces. Michelangelo’s David, now moved indoors in the Accademia Gallery, originally adorned the piazza before the palace.

The Accademia gallery was founded in 1784 by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo of the Lorraine family. For a long time it was considered to be the deposit for Uffizi exhibits, such as Botticelli’s Primavera. Among its present exhibits are Giovanni da Milano's Pieta (fourteenth century), the Annunciation by Lorenzo Monaco (fifteenth century), the beautiful front called Adimari Cassone showing a sumptuous marriage procession (c. 1450) and the Madonna of the Sea attributed to Botticelli (1445-1510). After the recent restoration much attention was paid to works of art of 14-17th centuries. Works by Lorenzo Pampaloni and Luigi Bartolini, famous Italian sculptors of the 19th century, are also showcased in the gallery.

The Pitti Palace was begun during the second half of 15th century by Luca Pitti, but remained unfinished after his death. Brunelleschi contributed to the design of the palace and his pupil Luca Fancelli built it. Nowadays the palace and the Boboli Gardens behind it contain some of the city’s most renowned museums, among which The Palatine Gallery, The Gallery of Modern Art, The Silver Museum and the Porcelain Museum.

Uffizi Gallery is not only one of the most famous art galleries, but also one of the oldest. The project was elaborated by Cosimo I de Medici and realized by his son Francesco. The Medici, the richest and most influential family of the city, constantly expanded the gallery, making it a perfect venue for the period artists.  After the extinction of the family artistic treasures of the Uffizi became the heritage of the city.  The gallery showcases masterpieces by famous Florentine artists along with foreign painters, such as  Durer, Van der Goes.
