Florence boasts hundreds of exquisite  restaurants, serving local specialties and world cuisine. Tuscan cuisine, based on  finest and freshest agricultural ingredients, complemented by excellent wines, among which the famous Chianti Classico and some newer labels as Sassicaia or Carmignano, makes visiting restaurants a sheer delight. Just a few useful tips to cope with Italian dining terminology.

Antipasti, or snacks, include salami, cheese, crostino, bruschetta, carpaccio. Primo piatto, first course, is often lasagna, various types of pasta, Pici, tagliatelle, Spaghetti. Secondo piatto, the main course, usually includes meat or fish with garnish, salads. Dolce – th dessert, featuring vast choice of pastries, among which tiramisu, torta della nonna, millefoglie and other. The city is famous for specialty coffees, among which Corto, or Ristretto – strong black coffee, Lungo – coffee with bigger amount of water, Macciato –coffee with a dash of milk, Corretto, Cappuccino etc. Ammazza caffe – after the coffee – includes a limoncello, a sweet liqueur, a Grappa, an amaro and other sophisticated liqueurs.

Just to name several recommended dining locations, Garibaldi restaurant, located in the historical heart of the city, offers traditional Tuscan cuisine.  La Reggia degli Etruschi, located in Fiesole, very close to Florence, is a perfect palace for relaxation in charming rural settings. The restaurant also boasts rich “enoteca” (winery). La Pentola dell’Oro is another superb dining location in the city. Ristorante Il Cantastorie in the very heart of the city offers live music and mythical performances for a charming evening with  friends. Ristorante Il Cantinone is a traditional place, decorated as brick cellar with vaulted ceilings, where mixed crostini, wild boar and hare, Florentine style triple, fresh home-made pasta, Florentine steak with truffle, vegetable or tomato and bread soup, oven cooked beans with sausage are served.
